ZigBee was developed for home and building automation, but is also used for some industrial sensor networks and meter reading applications. It is best for control/monitoring application with low amounts of data. As Zigbee use a mesh network, all nodes may take part in the forwarding of messages, and must therefore be main operated. Because the frequency is 2.45 GHz, the range is limited and there are losses in building materials, but this is compensated by the multi-hop feature of the mesh protocol provided there are enough nodes in the network.
