File type:
File name:
File description:
When designing the PCB layout for the RF modules, there are some measures that need to be taken to get the best performance from the radio module. In this application note, we will suggest some best practices for your product to succeed.
There are many different wireless standards and technologies available to enable the internet of things (IoT). The different technologies have different pro’s and con’s depending on the use case and the end customer. Trying to keep up with the latest wireless trends can drain a company of all its resources and take attention from its core business. The solution recommended by Radiocrafts is to use a modular approach and a common RF module footprint that enables all the technologies offered by Radiocrafts without modifications to the PCB.
When selecting the right radio technology, the achievable communication range is an important factor. This document review how to analyse radio range based on parameter provided in the data sheets for the different module families. Some measurement results from practical range testing are also shown
The purpose of this document is to list some of the most common issues that customers report when using Radiocrafts modules, and the solution to these issues.
Radiocrafts offers a wide range of wireless modules targeting different solutions word-wide. This Application Note informs how to select and use Radiocrafts modules for FCC compliance in US.
“The Radiocrafts Demo Boards and USB-sticks include an on-board firmware upgrade connector compatible with different flash programming adapters. It is also recommended that PCB layouts include a connector for firmware upgrade. This Application Note describes how to upgrade the firmware of any Radiocrafts RFmodule using either a CC Debugger or the FlashPro-CC tools.”
The RC1xx0 and RC2x00 series of RF Modules with integrated protocol offers easy adaptation of wireless communication utilizing a simple UART serial interface. In their standard versions without any required configuration the modules offer two pins for controlling PA, LNA and SPDTs for signal switching. Two SPDTs are required since it is only one RF pin on the Radiocrafts modules.

Radiocrafts offers software tools to support in the evaluation and development of new applications.

Co-processor, an easy way to use 802.15.4 (g/e) on the RC1880 and RC1880(CEF) module platforms

Radiocrafts provides software solutions you can use to more easily customise your module.

We have compiled the TI-15.4-STACK Co-Processor with the pin mapping done to fit our RC1880 and RC1880CEF demo boards. This firmware can be downloaded free of charge from the Radiocrafts website. Adding this to the RC1880(CEF) creates a fully functional IEEE 802.15.4 (g/e) RF module.

The TI-15.4-STACK Co-Processor provides an interface for configuration of network operations (for example, starting a network, scan for the network, join the network) with or without security, and frequency hopping. In addition, it gives an interface for sending and receiving data.

The combined solution, that we refer to as RC18xx-COP, is a complete Customizable RF module supporting the IEE802.15.4 wireless standard that supports star networking on sub-GHz frequencies.

The RC18xx-COP also makes it easy for the users to add IEEE 802.15.4 functionality to an existing product as well while also providing great flexibility in the choice of microcontrollers.

Read the RC18xx Firmware Development User Manual for more details.

Customizable RF Modules FAQ

Why choose a customizable RF module instead of developing my own wireless solution?

Developing a wireless product from scratch requires RF design expertise, firmware development, regulatory testing, and certification. Radiocrafts customizable modules allow you to leverage a pre-qualified hardware platform while adding application-specific functionality, significantly reducing development time, cost, and risk.

What is the typical customization process when working with Radiocrafts?

A typical project follows these steps:

  1. Define application requirements.
  2. Select the most suitable Radiocrafts module platform.
  3. Review hardware and firmware customization requirements.
  4. Develop and validate custom firmware.
  5. Prototype and test.
  6. Pilot deployment.
  7. Volume production.

Radiocrafts can support customers throughout the entire process, from concept through manufacturing.

What can be customized using a customizable module from Radiocrafts?

Customization options may include:

  • Embedded application firmware
  • Proprietary communication protocols
  • Sensor interfaces
  • Device behavior and logic
  • Network functionality
  • Security features
  • Data collection and processing functions
  • Gateway communication interfaces

Radiocrafts works with customers to define the required feature set and implement it directly on the module.

Can Radiocrafts develop custom firmware for my application?

Yes. Radiocrafts offers firmware customization services and can implement application-specific functionality directly within the module. This can eliminate the need for additional software development and, in some cases, reduce or eliminate the need for an external microcontroller.

Do I need RF expertise to use a customizable RF module?

No. One of the primary benefits is that customers can add wireless connectivity without becoming RF experts. The radio design, RF testing, and certification aspects are already handled through the module platform.

What frequency bands are available for the Customizable RF modules?

Radiocrafts offers customizable RF module platforms across multiple frequency bands, including:

  • 169 MHz
  • 433 MHz
  • 868 MHz
  • 915 MHz
  • 2.4 GHz

This allows customers to select the best option based on range requirements, regulatory requirements, and regional deployment needs.

Can custom sensor interfaces be integrated?

Yes. Custom sensor drivers and interfaces can be integrated into the module firmware. Radiocrafts specifically supports customization for sensor applications and can adapt firmware to work with customer-selected sensors and peripherals.

How does customization reduce time-to-market?

By starting with a proven hardware platform and adding only the required custom functionality, companies can avoid lengthy RF development cycles, certification challenges, and low-level wireless protocol development. This significantly shortens the path from concept to production.

Does Radiocrafts assist with integration and design reviews?

Yes. Radiocrafts provides technical support during development, including schematic reviews, PCB layout guidance, and antenna design recommendations to help customers achieve optimal wireless performance.

Can I start with a standard module and later move to a customized version?

Yes. Many customers begin with a standard module for proof-of-concept and prototyping, then add custom firmware and application-specific functionality as product requirements mature. Because many Radiocrafts modules share common hardware platforms and footprints, migration can be straightforward.
