Customizable Products

A Customizable platform helps you to create your own RF module. It removes all the RF hardware design and test investment and risk from your project design. You develop the embedded firmware based on industry-standard PHY/MAC layers. We will support you with a fully tested module platform and, if the design goes to volume, then we can program your code on the module, creating a module with a unique part-number that can only be purchased by customers that have a LOA (Letter of Authority) from the company that developed the firmware.

Co-processor, an easy way to 802.15.4 (g/e) on the RC1880

The TI-15.4 stack can be compiled as a wireless network Co-Processor, an easy way to 802.15.4 (g/e) on the RC1880. In this option an external application processor has access to the wireless features over UART or SPI.

The TI-15.4-STACK Co-Processor provides an interface for configuration of network operations (e.g. starting a network, scan for the network, join the network) in Beacon or non-Beacon mode, with or without Security, and Frequency Hopping. In addition, it gives an interface for sending and receiving data.

Radiocrafts has compiled the TI-15.4-STACK Co-Processor with the pin mapping done to fit the RC1880xxx demo board. This firmware can be downloaded free of charge as-is from the Radiocrafts website. Adding this to the RC1880 creates a fully functional IEEE 802.15.4 (g/e) RF module.

The combined solution, that we refer to as RC18xx-COP, is a complete RF module with an IEE802.15.4 Phy and MAC layers that supports star networking on sub-gigahertz frequencies.

The RC18xx-COP will connect to any microcontroller through UART interface. For example, a Co-Processor can be combined with a Windows or Linux host processor, or be part of an embedded system using a microcontroller.

The RC18xx-COP makes it easy for the users to add IEEE 802.15.4 functionality to an existing product and also provides great flexibility in the choice of microcontrollers.

Tools and software for a successful RC18xx-COP project.

There are three elements needed for a successful RC18xx-COP development project.

  • The RC1880-DK, the hardware platform with programming pins. This can be ordered from any of our distributors.
  • The RC18xx firmware development manual, that guides you through the implementation of the firmware. You get this when you download the firmware.
  • The pre-compiled COP firmware.

By downloading the file, you will be accepting the Radiocrafts Software License Agreement for the COP software for the RC18xx (the agreement will be shown before the download).

Product Details

The Customizable platforms from Radiocrafts are pre-qualified and pre-assessed RF platforms that contain all hardware for a complete RF module with 50 Ohm RF I/O, digital serial interfaces, power etc. See the datasheet for details.

The RC188x supports the IEEE 802.15.4g PHY and MAC as well as Wireless M-Bus implementations and, in RC1885, a 2.4GHz transceiver for BLE.

The IEEE802.15.4g is a 433 and 868/915 amendment that can be used for proprietary solutions as well as Wi-SUN applications. 868/915 is supported by the RC1880.

Wireless M-Bus is a global standard developed for metering but is also used in many industrial applications.

The intended use of BLE in a combo radio, such as the RC1885, is to be an interface to a smartphone for network commissioning.

The RC24xx series supports the IEEE 802.15.4 PHY and MAC. The IEEE 802.15.4, a 2.4 GHz standard that is used for proprietary solutions as well as industry standards such as ZigBee, 6LoWPAN, WirelessHART, and ISA100.11a.

Radiocrafts also provides manufacturing, test and programming of the customer defined firmware in the flash, and deliver a fully functional RF module with a unique part-number. Radiocrafts will not sell this part to any other customer unless they have a Letter of Authority (LOA) from the primary customer.

Radiocrafts offers two series of the platform, the RC188x that is based on the CC13xx from Texas Instruments and the RC24xx that is based on the CC2530 from Texas Instruments.

The customer will create the firmware using the SimpleLink CC13x0 SDK resp. the CC2530DK that can be downloaded from the Texas Instruments website.

The SimpleLink CC13x0 SDK includes the TI 15.4-STACK software, providing an IEEE 802.15.4e/g-based star topology networking solution for Sub-1 GHz band, along with a large set of proprietary RF examples for Sub-1 GHz based on the RF driver through the EasyLink RF abstraction layer.

The CC2530DK comes with various software examples including the IEEE 802.15.4 compliant TIMAC, ZigBee compliant Z-Stack, proprietary SimpliciTI networking protocol.

Once the code is developed, the customer delivers this code to Radiocrafts to be implemented in the manufacturing flow at Radiocrafts. The programming of the modules will be done after the HW test before the modules are sent for delivery to the ordering customer.

APPLICATION NOTES

File type:
File name:
File description:
The Radiocrafts Demo Boards and USB-sticks include an on-board firmware upgrade connector compatible with different flash programming adapters. It is also recommended that PCB layouts include a connector for firmware upgrade. This Application Note describes how to upgrade the firmware of any Radiocrafts RF module using either a CC Debugger or the FlashPro-CC tools.
There are many different wireless standards and technologies available to enable the internet of things (IOT). The different technologies have different pros and cons depending on the use case and the end customer. Trying to keep up with the latest wireless trends can drain a company of all its resources and take attention from its core business. The solution recommended by Radiocrafts is to use a modular approach and a common RF module footprint that enables all the technologies offered by Radiocrafts without needing modifications to the PCB.

For all our Customizable modules, Development Kit suitcases are available for rapid prototyping and proof of concept. The kits contain:

  • Two Development Boards with the module of choice, onboard USB level shifter, USB connector, SMA antenna connector, and I/O break-out
  • Quarterwave stub antennas with SMA connector
  • USB cables
  • Additionally, the HP variants include AC/DC Power Supplies

One kit will make a wireless link “out of the box” and feature easy access to all the modules I/O-pins. The kit can be used together with the PC software tools.
