Antenna gain is defined as the radiated power in max direction vs the average radiated power. Note that the efficiency of the antenna is also a key parameter as it gives how much the radiated average power is vs the conductive power into antenna. A antenna with high gain is only an advantage when the product orientation can be controlled. If the product orientation is not controller a 0dBi antenna is normally preferred.
